  16. <p>Shevardnadze wins approval to lead Georgia out of war
  17. </p>
  18. <p>    Georgian leader Eduard Shevardnadze could barely suppress his
  19. jubilance at what he called the "embarrassing" results in the
  20. parliamentary elections. In the first balloting held in the
  21. republic since President Zviad Gamsakhurdia was forcibly
  22. deposed last January, Georgians by a majority of 95% endorsed
  23. the former Soviet Foreign Minister's uncontested bid to become
  24. chairman of a new parliament. Shevardnadze promised his new
  25. constituents that he would do everything he could "not to leave
  26. them disappointed."

  28. <p>    Shevardnadze had staked his reputation on the
  29. parliamentary elections. The gamble paid off. Georgians turned
  30. out to vote in such huge numbers -- over 80% cast ballots in
  31. most regions -- that many had to wait for hours in line. Armed
  32. with such a mandate, Shevardnadze hopes to revive peace talks
  33. with Moscow over the Abkhazian crisis, and promptly moved last
  34. week to set up a new defense council to bring his own military
  35. forces under control.
